Requisites:
Aims: To introduce students to the economic contexts in which firms operate in France, to analyse the causes of economic growth and industrial development in the post-war period, to present key concepts from the literature and develop analytical skills, to introduce students to the language of the French business environment.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the unit, students should be able to:
* demonstrate understanding of the economic contexts in which firms operate in France;
* analyse the causes of economic growth and industrial development in the post-war period;
* present key concepts form the literature and demonstrate analytical skills;
* to show knowledge and understanding of key aspects of the French economic and business environment in written and spoken French.
Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamwork, and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Language skills are developed in this unit.
Content:
Causes of economic growth and development in the post-war period (1945-1973); reasons for recession and structural change in the 1970s; analysis of economic performance and public policies from the 1980s to the present time; role of industrial policy: nationalisation and privatisation; foreign trade policies. The unit is taught in French.
