Aims: To examine how cinema and narrative have cross-fertilized to produce an artistically satisfying critique of Italian society. Attention will focus on the narrative techniques appropriate to each medium, to narrative theory in novel and film, and to the question of fidelity in adaptation.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit students will be able to: * explain the importance of the links between literature and film in Italy; * critically assess a variety of film adaptations from literature; * explain how each director handles the theme of the individual and the State. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit. Language skills are developed in this unit. Content: Tomasi di Lampedusa Il Gattopardo, Alberto Moravia Il conformista and Leonardo Sciascia il contesto. Adaptations by Luchino Visconti, Bernardo Bertolucci and Francesco Rosi. Taught partly in Italian. |
