Aims: This unit aims to provide students with an insight into the political and cultural impact of memories of the Stasi in contemporary Germany.
Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete the unit will be able to:
* undertake detailed formal and thematic analysis of a variety of texts and media;
* situate their analysis in the context of contemporary socio-political debates;
* show an understanding of the relevance of the history of the Stasi to the formation of East German identity and memories of East German society.
Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.
Content:
Students will examine socio-political debates on the role of the Stasi and the opening of the Stasi files and analyse the portrayal of the Stasi and its impact on East German society in a variety of media. Texts/media studied will include: journalistic articles by Stasi victims and informers; a selection of published Stasi files; websites and printed material from the Stasi museum at Hohenschönhausen; Thomas Brussig, Helden wie wir (1996); Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (dir.), Das Leben der anderen (2006). The unit is taught in German.
