Aims: To familiarize the students with the use of translation memory software packages and other translation tools. To make them aware of useful internet search techniques.
Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete the unit successfully will be able to demonstrate an appropriate knowledge and understanding of these tools and to have a greater understanding of how these tools are used by freelancers and translation companies.
Skills:
The students will gain skills in the use of basic translation memory software, as well as an understanding of how other software tools can be used in translation. They will learn basic software skills that can be transferred to other translation memory packages.
Content:
2 x 2 hour lectures on the use of software tools by translators. This will inform the students of the main approach used in most translation memory software and provide a comparison of all the different packages in mainstream use. There will be mention of other useful tools such as voice recognition software and OCR software packages.
2 x 2 hour hands-on sessions on using translation memory to familiarize students with the main functions of these types of software.
