This unit is only available to students on the Foundation Degree in Funeral Services.
Aims: To expand on knowledge gained in Developing Professional Competence 1.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students will be able to:
* Describe the usual requirements for staffing, layout and planning of a funeral home, the standards required by law and by trade examiners;
* Explain and evaluate the registration procedures following a death including the function of the Registrar;
* Complete and/or refer all paperwork relating to medical certification of death to relevant parties;
* Knowledge of the Coroner system in England and Wales;
* Discuss, assess and review the law and practice of burial and cremation in England and Wales;
* Discuss and compare the differences in procedure in Scotland and Northern Ireland with regard to registration and the Coroner (Procurator Fiscal) and in burial and cremation procedures to those in England and Wales;
* Describe the specific registration procedures for pre-viable foetus, stillbirth, neonatal, postnatal and infant deaths;
* Display a greater understanding of general office procedures in the funeral industry.
Skills:

* To synthesise information from a number of sources in order to gain a coherent understanding;
* To understand and complete complex legal documentation;
* To compare and evaluate procedures from different countries;
* Apply to apply theory in relation to work based practice.
Content:

* The premises of the funeral director;
* Registration procedures including function of the Registrar, liability to register a death and who can act as an informant;
* Medical certification of cause of death;
* Coroner's procedures - role of the Coroner and Coroner's officer, forms and possible actions;
* The Law and Practice of cremation;
* The Law and Practice of burial;
* Deaths and funerals in Scotland and Ireland;
* When a child dies;
* Office procedures - newspaper announcements, acknowledgement cards, service sheets and donations.
