Requisites:
This unit is only available to students on the Foundation Degree in Funeral Services.
Aims: This unit will:
* introduce students to the importance of legislation in relation to the funeral industry;
* Chart the major changes to legislation that impact on funeral services;
* Assess the impact of legislative change on the responsibilities of the funeral industry.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students will be able to:
* Describe and assess the major changes in legislation in relation to practice within the funeral services industry;
* Describe, understand and analyse changing public opinion of the ethical practices related to subjects such as organ donation, reuse of graves;
* Describe and assess the impact on practice of EU legislation of relevance to the funeral services industry.
Skills:

* To reflect on the impact of legislation and policy on practice;
* To evaluate and assess research evidence as well as a variety of other information;

* Registration of deaths and stillbirths;
* Disposal of bodies;
* Disposal of foetal remains;
* Responsibility for funeral arrangements, expenses and debt recovery;
* Cremation legislation;
* Organ donation and the cremation of body parts;
* Coroners responsibilities;
* Exhumation;
* Disused burial grounds and reuse of graves;
* Repatriation and transportation.
