Description: Aims:
To present a series of topics of current active research interest in various areas of biomechanics. These will form a useful introduction to current research in these areas and will introduce more advanced concepts of measurement and analytical techniques.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit the student will have: Demonstrated a knowledge and detailed understanding of the principal components and structures of the musculo-skeletal system and the advanced engineering techniques used to solve problems in these areas.

Skills:
Problem solving; numeracy; working independently.

Content:
Structure/function relationships in cortical and cancellous bone, bone physiology and fracture healing, growth plate mechanics, structural mechanics of hard tissues, mechanically adaptive bone remodelling, gait analysis (including normal and pathological gait), mechanisms of failure of prosthetic joints and their consequences.
