Abbas graduated from the University of Tehran (Iran) in 2000 with a BSc degree in Civil Engineering. He completed a MEng in Structural Engineering in 2003, with his thesis on the 'Study of earthquake induced multi-component internal forces in spectrum method.'
From 2003 until 2010, Abbas worked in industry as project manager, consulting and supervisor engineer, and design assistant in several projects. In addition to this, Abbas taught civil and structural engineering in a number of Iranian academic institutions from 2004 to 2011.
From 2004 to 2006, Abbas was a senior member of a research team focused on the ‘Study of strength and structural behaviour of masonry educational buildings (schools) according to the Iranian code of practice for seismic resistant design of buildings to make them resistant.’
In January 2012, Abbas joined the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering at the University of Bath as a PhD candidate in structural engineering. His research is on ‘FRP-strengthening of continuous RC beams’ under the supervision of Professor Tim Ibell, Dr Antony Darby and Dr Mark Evernden.
In April 2013, Abbas was promoted to the role of research assistant in an EPSRC funded project titled ‘Explotation of moment redistribution in continuous FRP-strengthened concrete beams.’
