Innovation in Learning and Teaching Award

The Innovation in Learning and Teaching Award recognises a significant contribution to innovation in curriculum design, content or delivery. The Awards Committee looks for nominees who can provide evidence of pedagogical innovation, either one example of major change, or a record of innovative practice over several years.

Nominations

Please complete a nomination form and send to Sarah Turpin, Learning & Teaching Enhancement Office by:

5.00 p.m on Friday 16 March 2012

Nominees should be able to demonstrate:

1. Successful innovation in curriculum design, content or delivery

2. Participation in new approaches to teaching within or outside the department which may or may not include the enhancement of the learning experience through the appropriate use of electronic tools and techniques

Nominees will be required to produce a personal statement of up to 800 words to articulate the pedagogical rationale for the innovation and to articulate the difference it makes to students.

Supporting statements for nominations are requested from the nominee’s Head of Department, a senior colleague (such as his or her Director of Studies) and the relevant SSLC representatives.

Eligibility

It is open to all members of teaching staff.

Criteria for Award

Terms approved by Senate:

  1. The Award will be made to a member of staff or postgraduate research student who makes a significant contribution to innovation in curriculum design, content or delivery.
  2. Previous winners of the Award will be eligible for nomination five years after the year that the Award was made.
  3. Unsuccessful candidates may be nominated for the Award in subsequent years.
  4. Nominations for the Award may be submitted by students (graduate and undergraduate) and other members of academic staff. Nomination must be supported by evidence of the significant contribution to innovation in curriculum design, content or delivery from the nominee and from other staff.

Background, eligibility and formal terms

Executive Committee in January 2000 supported the establishment of an annual award (initially for a fixed period of three academic sessions, 1999/2000 to 2001/2002) to recognise achievement in the field of ‘innovation in learning and teaching’. This was approved by Senate in March 2000, and the permanent establishment of the award was approved on 20 March 2002.

The Award consists of a prize of £750* to the successful nominee and £1,500 to their Department (that the recipient can use to support their teaching or research). If a joint award is made, the winners will each receive the £750 prize, but the Departmental award will be shared equally. The award will be presented at the Summer graduation ceremonies.

*The prize of £750 will be paid through the payroll and subject to PAYE.
