Apply for Funding Strand 1: Adding Value to Existing Partnerships

This funding strand supports projects that strengthen existing international partnerships and contribute to building new strategic networks.

Strand 1a: Larger scale projects

About the strand

The University has a strong portfolio of existing partners. This strand of funding supports projects which will add value to already established relationships or help transform partnerships into regional, strategic hubs in China & East Asia, Latin America, India, Africa, Southeast Asia & Australia, or other Newton or GCRF partner countries.

If you are successful you could receive between £10,000 and £20,000.

See a list of our existing partners, including our most active partnerships.

Award criteria

Approaches to adding value may include:

  • growing bilateral research collaborations or embedding them into broader regional or cross-regional research hubs of excellence
  • supporting disciplinary capacities in strong research areas
  • developing collaborative platforms for research training or researcher exchanges (e.g. joint supervision, joint degrees, postgraduate summer schools, ECR workshops)
  • integrated teaching activities (e.g. master classes, co-taught modules)

In addition, the funding strand is open to other high quality international research collaborations which may not fall neatly into this remit.

Expected output

  • Meetings with researchers, non-academic or industry partners.
  • Organisation of seminars, workshops or conferences.
  • Preparation of a joint publication and an external funding proposal, to be submitted within 12 months of project end, or other network-building outputs, as appropriate.
  • Award recipients may be requested to meet with alumni during overseas visits

Strand 1b: Smaller scale projects

About the strand

International collaborations tend to grow from smaller, individual relationships, in which personal meetings allow trust to be established and opportunities for joint activities to be identified. Some established collaborations are also more likely to continue developing at a smaller scale. This strand therefore supports smaller project activities with existing or new partners.

If you are successful you could receive up to £3,000.

Award criteria

We invite applications for projects in one of the following categories:

  • exploratory research collaborations with new partners
  • collaborations with existing partners with the potential to grow into a stronger institutional links, perhaps in a new discipline
  • existing collaborations of research excellence

Expected outputs

  • Meetings with researchers, non-academic or industry partners
  • Preparation of a joint publication to be submitted within 12 months of project end.
  • Identification of specific funding opportunities, or other outputs, as appropriate
  • Award recipients may be requested to meet with alumni during overseas visits
