Credit schemes

An explanation of the different credit schemes for measuring learning hours in higher education and which scheme the University uses for undergraduate courses.

Factsheet

You will find that material published by the Department for Education and the Student Loans Company refer to credits based on the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) whereby one credit equals 10 hours of learning (including tuition, assessment and self-guided study). One academic year of full-time undergraduate study typically equals 120 CATS credits.

The University of Bath uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation Scheme (ECTS). In the ECTS scheme, one credit equals 20 hours of learning (including tuition, assessment and self-guided study). Consequently, one academic year of full-time undergraduate study typically equals 60 ECTS credits, the equivalent of 120 CATS credits.
