Renewable and low-carbon engineering materials are a key focus in infrastructural development worldwide. Our course is unique in the UK for the breadth of materials and sustainable construction methods it introduces you to.

Focusing on sustainability, you'll explore how to use materials and design to enhance our built environment. You’ll develop an in-depth understanding of the behaviour of structural materials and their characteristics. We give you the skills to analyse different materials and investigate non-conventional technologies through specialist units.

Our course draws on the research knowledge in our Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering and BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials. This gives you access to the latest developments in structural materials such as timber, concrete, earth, straw and hemp. Our academics’ international collaborations and research expertise feed into our teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

We have a range of facilities to support your studies. Our laboratories and workshops contain machinery and equipment that meet industry standards. These include concrete, timber, advanced materials, and geomaterials laboratories. You’ll also have access to specialist computer and teaching facilities. Our links with the BRE mean that you could have the opportunity to use their facilities through project work.

The practical and theoretical skills you gain on our course will equip you for a career in industry, research or academia. You’ll graduate with:

  • skills to design with structural engineering materials in sustainable ways
  • the ability to harness that knowledge in a business environment
  • analytical and teamwork skills to deal with the open-ended problems typical in industry

Our course also meets the educational requirements you need to become a chartered engineer.

Some of our graduates choose to further their studies with us through our PhD programme to pursue academic and research careers.

Course structure

This course lasts 1 year. It starts in October 2018 and ends in 2019.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies.
