University of Bath

Access and share your work online using files.bath

Files.bath is a secure, online service which allows you to upload, access and share your files with people all over the world.

Why you should use files.bath

You can use files.bath to store your files. You can then get to them from any computer and share them with anyone, including people outside the University. Everything is stored on the University servers, which keeps your files secure.

You can log in to files.bath with your University username, like abc12, and password. Your username is on your library card.

Upload your files

If you save your files to the H: Drive or X: Drive on a University computer you will be able to access them from files.bath. Anything you upload to the 'H Drive - Home' folder on files.bath will also be accessible from your H: Drive on any University computer.

You can upload files directly to files.bath. This will let you share the files with others in the University and people outside it.

If you wish to share a file with other people, you must upload or copy it to another folder. You cannot share a file stored within the 'H Drive - Home' or 'X Drive' folders.

To upload files:

  1. Log in to files.bath with your University username and password.
  2. Click on the plus (+) icon to create a new folder for your files if you wish to share them.
  3. Open the new folder, then click on the plus (+) icon again to upload the files.

Access and edit your files

To get to a file:

  1. Log in to files.bath with your University username and password.
  2. You will see any folders and files you have created within files.bath. You will also see your H: drive and X: drive folders.
  3. Click on the file or folder name you want to open. Files will download to your computer when you click on them.

If you want to edit a file, download it to your computer and edit it. When you are finished, upload the new version to files.bath in the same location.

Share a file or folder

You can share any file or folder which you upload directly to files.bath. Files and folders in 'H Drive - Home' and 'X Drive' can not be shared directly.

Sharing files with someone in the University

  1. Click the sharing icon (three connected dots) on the file or folder you want to share. A new panel will open.
  2. Start typing the person's name in the 'Share with users or groups ...' field. Their name should appear in a dropdown menu. Select it.
  3. Tick or untick the 'can share' and 'can edit' boxes to change what each person can do to the file.
  4. Tick 'notify by email' to send them an email saying they can access the file.

Once you've shared a file with someone at the University, they can log in to files.bath and access it.

Sharing files with someone outside the University

  1. Click the sharing icon (three connected dots) on the file or folder you want to share. A new panel will open.
  2. Tick 'Share link'.

  4. Enter the email address of the person you want to share the file with in the 'Email link to person' field.
  5. Click 'Send'.
