About this course

These sessions will focus on improving delegates' awareness of and confidence in using the University disciplinary, capability and absence management policies.

  • Understand their role and take responsibility for managing staff through capability, discipline and absence issues
  • Understand reasons behind problems of discipline, capability and absence and be able to take remedial and preventative action on that basis
  • Have confidence that they can manage their staff to avoid problems and so avoid recourse to formal processes
  • Have strategies and approaches to informal conflict resolution (so permitting early intervention)
  • Be able to give constructive, direct feedback and set clear expectations
  • Be able to follow through informal and/or formal processes to monitor and track employees progress
  • Understand the link between the 'micro' and 'macro' management i.e. managing of individual staff members' performance to improve the overall working environment (e.g. the culture) to boost team and organisational performance

This course complements the ‘Performance management – part 2 – skills & techniques’ course. We advise delegates to attend this part I course first.
