Manual Handling

All handling operations will need to be assessed for risk based on the following criteria:

  • Task or activity

  • Individual carrying out the task

  • Load – size, weight, shape

  • Environment in which the work is being undertaken

Wherever possible any type of handling operation should follow the risk hierarchy which means that the need for manual lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying should be eliminated:

  • Eliminate by automating the task if possible

  • Reduce by splitting the load to make it lighter and smaller; sharing the load with someone else; limiting the distance or lifting time

  • Control by ensuring all those involved in manual handling receive appropriate training and that the activity has been risk assessed; ensure there is suitable lighting, flooring, temperature; use work equipment aids (sack trucks); ensure sufficient room for the task to be carried out; keep the floor clear of obstruction
