Modern Pentathlon Collection

A collection relating to the sport of modern pentathlon combining pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running. The material consists of the archives of the national governing body, Pentathlon GB (formerly the Modern Pentathlon Association of Great Britain), and associated material.

The collection is composed of correspondence, committee minutes, regulations, press material, photographs, newsletters, as well as a sizable number of national and international event programmes and results data. There is some material relating to the international governing body, Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon. The collection also includes biographical material relating to key figures, in particular, Jim Fox (pictured). Fox was ten times the British Champion and featured in four Olympiads winning gold in the 1976 Montreal Olympics team event.

Modern pentathlon has its origins in Great Britain as a preserve of the armed forces. This military aspect of the sport is well represented in the collection.

The collection was deposited with the University of Bath by Pentathlon GB in 2009 with the assistance of Mr Andy Archibald a member of Great Britain’s 1976 Olympics gold medal team.

The collection is not yet fully catalogued.

Not all the material in this collection may yet be available for consultation. Enquiries should be addressed in the first instance to the University Archivist.
