Borrowing, Returning and Renewing items
Borrowing Items
You can borrow books and other material on Level 2 using the Self-Issue machines. You will need your Library card and PIN. Please note: you should only use your own Library Card - if you are caught using someone else's card, you may have your Library privileges withdrawn.
Most students can borrow up to 20 items plus 4 short loan items.
Each item has been given one of the following three loan periods (each loan period reflects a different level of user demand):
- 28 Day Loan: the standard loan period for all members of the University
- 7 Day Loan: these items have a pink date label inside and pink tape on the spine
- Short Loan: Short loan items can be borrowed between 9am & 4pm OR between 4pm & 10am the following day. They are held behind the Main Counter on Level 2 in an area which is not accessible to users. To borrow a short loan item, please ask for the relevant item at the Main Counter. They have a yellow date label inside with information highlighting the Short Loan status of the item.
Reference Only items are not for loan and can only be used in the Library (for example some reference materials are marked Reference Only)
Postgraduate Dissertations and Theses can be borrowed from the Library Issue Desk during staffed hours. However, they cannot be removed from the Library. These items cannot be replaced if lost or damaged.
Returning Items
To return your books:
- post them through the slots in the front of the main Issue Desk counter on Level 2 at any time
OR
- during the main counter's opening hours, hand them over to Library Staff at the returns service point
If you are unable to return your books in person and cannot renew them, you can also return your books back to the library using postal services. However, please remember that you are still liable for books you are returning this way and would be responsible for fines and/or cost of replacement if they were delayed or went missing while they were in transit.
Renewing Items
You can renew your loans in three different ways:-
- Sign in to you borrower record using either your BUCS login details OR your Library number & PIN
- Once logged in, select the on Renew Your Loans option
- Select the items you would like to renew
- Check Your Borrower Record to find out when the items are now due
- You may like to write a note on the date label inside the book to remind you of the new due date - alternatively, you can use the Loan Reminders Service
- Bring the books and your Library card to the Library and using the Self-Issue machines on Level 2
- Renew over the telephone on 01225 385000: this is a dedicated 24 hour answerphone service. Please quote the following information in your message:
- your Library card number
- your name
- your return telephone number (in case of any problems or queries)
Items may not be renewed if your total fines are over £10 or if another reader has placed a hold (reservation) for the item you have on loan.
