Where to pay Library fines?

Fine Rates 

 Short Loans £5 per day or part of day overdue
 Inter Library Loans 80p per day overdue

The maximum fine for recalled loan items is £20.00 (e.g. Inter-Library Loans) and the standard replacement value for a non-returned book is £40.00 though borrowers can purchase replacement copies where books have been lost.

Why do we fine?

The demand on Library books is ever-increasing. It is important, therefore, for readers to obtain quick access to as many books as possible. The fines system is intended to discourage borrowers from retaining books that are required by other readers. Fines are set from time to time by the University Librarian, in consultation with staff and student representatives.

How to avoid fines?

1)   Respond to recall notices sent to your University email account advising of the due date when one or more of the items you have on loan needs to be returned. Bring the item(s) back to the Library or return via the Virgil Building book drop at the earliest opportunity.

2) Return Short Loan items and Inter-Library Loan items on or before the due date and times indicated in the book.  Items can be posted through the Returns slots near the Issue Desk on Level 2 of the Library or left in the book returns bin in the Virgil Building.  The Loan periods for Short Loan items are not automatically renewable.

2) Manage your borrower account online and check it regularly.  You can login using your BUCS username and password from campus PCs or from your computer off-campus via the borrowing: review your loans button shown on the Library homepage.   

3) Return your loans when they are recalled.  Return all borrowed items on Level 2 of the Library OR using the book drop bin in the Virgil Building:

    Leaving books anywhere else in the Library or on campus will not result in them being removed from your record. 

4) Please contact the Issue Desk before problems escalate.  All students are responsible for the items loaned to them until they are discharged from their record.  We will levy charges for the replacement costs of non-returned items and fines for the late return of Short Loan titles.  Contact Issue Desk staff to get your account unblocked before fines rise too high or if you have a query or problem related to items on your account.

(*Please note that during semester-time, the Issue Desk opens at 930am on Wednesdays to allow for staff training meetings.)
