The inspirational prize gives the team a unique opportunity to meet University alumni working in Google, Facebook, Instagram, Eventbrite and other world leading tech companies.

The winning app, 'Ambl', links with many different services, including Yelp, Google Maps and Flixster, to help users create a seamless night out, booking the cinema, theatre or a meal with suitable integrated transport options.

The team chose to steer clear of advertising in their app, focusing instead on developing affiliate commissions: a percentage payment by the restaurants, cinemas or other venues that receive bookings from the app's users.

The Ambl team of Ashton Clapp, Tristan Kemp and Ryan Cabot, all Computer Science students, scored top marks for technical content, business planning, and presentation.

Apps Crunch is organised by the Student’s Union’s Enterprise Bath team, and for the first time this year’s competition is sponsored by JP Morgan.

A second winning team, Verso, will get to spend a day with JP Morgan’s Technology Business Development team in London, for an enviable CV enhancing experience.

Sixteen teams of students from across the University worked for four weeks to design and develop a business idea and wireframe, or storyboard, of their app.

Local tech entrepreneurs, many of them graduates of the University, have worked with the students to mentor them in business and technical skills, as well as forming the panel of industry experts to judge the pitches.

Bath graduate David Kelly, Judge of Apps Crunch and Co-Founder of Storm Consultancy in Bath said: “I have been massively impressed by this year's Apps Crunch. I have seen a huge step up from last year's competition, with some fantastic ideas and no lack of ambition demonstrated.

"I have been thoroughly impressed to see this level of thinking and technical awareness coming out of the University of Bath from people so early in their careers, it shows massive potential for the future."

Ashton, aged 20 from Boston, USA said: "Winning the Apps Crunch competition is fantastic, we're all really excited to be going to San Francisco and to Silicon Valley. We're going to be meeting some Bath alumni and a couple of leading companies like Facebook and Google in one of the most exciting places in the world for tech startups. It will be a great opportunity to make connections that will benefit us throughout our careers."

Siobain Hone, Enterprise Education Manager, added: "This has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to put theory into practice and produce apps that will work in the real world. The connections and exposure both teams will get from their prizes will be invaluable to them."
