Dr Matthew Cole from the University’s Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET), in doing so becoming the youngest ever Fellow in the IET’s history.

Fellowship is the highest grade of IET membership and recognises the high level of experience, knowledge and ability a person has attained during their career. Representing various engineering sectors, Fellows are recognised as leading figures in their respected engineering and technology roles. At 31, Dr Cole has become the youngest ever person to become a Fellow of the IET.

The IET was officially formed in 2006 following a merge of Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE). With over 167,000 members worldwide in 150 countries, the IET aims to inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community, supporting technology innovation to meet the needs of society.

Dr Cole joined the University’s Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering in June 2017 as an Associate Professor, lecturing on the University’s MSc in Electronic Systems Design and BEng/MEng Electrical & Electronic Engineering degree courses.

He is a Director of Cambridge Xray Systems and has already achieved a number of accolades including being a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining; a Chartered Engineer; a Chartered Scientist; and a Chartered Physicist. Last year he was named in Forbes 30 under 30 and most recently was named by the MIT Technology Review as one of 2017’s 35 Innovators Under 35.

Dr Cole’s research expertise focusses on the growth and exploitation of nanomaterials for new kinds of electronics.

Dr Cole commented: “It is a great honour to be recognised by your peers in such a way. Achieving FIET status represents a personal career goal and reflects the support and mentorship of those varied, dynamic and exciting engineering communities I have been fortunate to work with.”

Head of the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, Dr Adrian Evans added: “In his relatively short time at Bath, Matt has shown himself to be an exceptional academic, excelling in all aspects of his work. It therefore comes as no surprise that this has been recognised by becoming a Fellow of the IET at the youngest age ever.”
