Mr David Young PhD Candidate

David is a doctoral candidate studying income, expenditure and circumstance variation.

Role

David Young joined the Institute for Policy Research (IPR) as a PhD candidate in October 2016. His doctoral research in the Department of Social and Policy Sciences and the IPR will focus on income, expenditure, circumstance variation and low-income families, under the supervision of Professor Jane Millar.

Career

David has spent several years working in the advice sector as a Welfare Rights Advisor and Researcher. Working with Advice Leeds, David carried out research on the impact of welfare reform and the experience of new refugees. Later, as Research Officer at Swindon Citizens Advice, he undertook a research project looking at advice and information needs and how third sector organisations work together to meet them.

Education

David received a BA in Politics from the University of Hull; his course included a final-year placement as a parliamentary researcher in the Houses of Parliament. In 2009, he completed an MSc in Social Science Research Methods at the University of Bristol. His masters research looked at immigration, ideals of citizenship and the experience of asylum seekers in a local area.
