Role
Joan Abbas joined the Institute for Policy Research (IPR) as a PhD candidate in October 2016. Her research, under the supervision of Professors Jane Millar and Nick Pearce, will explore the purported rise of ‘in-work benefits’, focusing on the extent, level and design of employment-conditional provisions across several OECD countries.
Career
After completing her MSc, Joan was employed at the Houses of Parliament, where she was concerned primarily with public information and engagement. She also played a part in the House of Commons Library’s 2015 General Election Project. In 2015, Joan joined National Taiwan University’s Department of Medical Education and Bioethics as a research assistant; during her tenure, she collaborated on a project comparing medical education accreditation in Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. More recently, Joan has worked as a researcher on a joint project between the University of Bath and the LSE exploring teaching excellence in the disciplines in higher education in the UK.
Education
Joan holds a BA in Media and Communications from Goldsmiths, University of London and an MSc in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her masters research focused on access to e-public services, and her undergraduate dissertation explored social and economic inequalities in the ‘internet age’.
