Research Interests

My current research interests are in nonlinear optics and quantum optics, particularly generating and studying light at the single-photon level. Materials with high optical nonlinearity can create individual pairs of photons from intense pulses of laser light through two processes: parametric downconversion (PDC) and four-wave mixing (FWM). The photon pairs produced enable both fundamental physics experiments and applications within the field of quantum information processing. My work is focused on how the properties of nonlinear materials influence the characteristics of the photon pairs generated in these processes, and how dispersion can be engineered to improve the quality of the photon pairs. I work within the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials and make use of our state-of-the-art photonic crystal fibre (PCF) fabrication facility. During my time in Bath, I have also worked on other aspects of PCF design and use, including sources of bright light using FWM in PCF, and transmission of high-intensity pulses in hollow-core PCF.
