The University is poised to begin exploratory work on the redevelopment of the 3 West building, with a vision to create a flagship facility that places Health and Wellbeing at the heart of our Claverton Down campus.
Under the proposals, 3 West will be a new interdisciplinary home for research and education in drug discovery, sport and preventative healthcare and technology. The redevelopment is part of a wider vision: bringing our ideas, our teaching and our partnerships closer together. What begins on campus will flow into new innovations, for example in the Bath Riverside Innovation District, where our researchers and students will work with partners in shared spaces to turn research into real-world impact.
The 3 West proposals are jointly led by Professor Deborah Wilson, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Professor Duncan Craig, Dean of the Faculty of Science.
Professor Deborah Wilson said: “The vision for 3 West is to take our collaboration and discovery to a new level. It will be more than the sum of its parts, a place where we will co-locate internationally recognised expertise across a range of disciplines to co-create a highly distinctive approach to our health and care research.”
Professor Duncan Craig added: “I wanted to thank everyone involved in helping us reach this significant step. The possibility of bringing together our cross-faculty expertise in the science underpinning drug discovery into one location is extremely exciting, as is the prospect of enhancing cooperation amongst our institutional health and research community. Our goal is for our early-stage discovery work to be further developed with partners into real-world, life changing therapeutic approaches.”
The next steps are to appoint a team of architects to assist us in developing the proposals further and start to bring this ambitious project into reality.
If further stages of the project are approved, the indicative timeline would see initial building work start in 2027.
