The ways in which commercial actors shape our health – from unhealthy product marketing to the shaping of policy environments – have gained increasing attention within the public health community. Yet navigating the growing body of evidence, tools, and frameworks available to address these forces can be challenging. A new, freely accessible resource hub, developed to meet this need, is now live.

What are commercial determinants of health?

Commercial determinants of health (CDoH) refer to the ways in which commercial actors and practices influence health and health equity. While many businesses contribute positively to society, certain powerful industries drive ill health, environmental harm, and inequality on a significant scale. Addressing these determinants requires evidence-based policy, strategic communication, and coordinated action across sectors.

About the resource hub

The Commercial Determinants of Health Resource Hub has been developed by the Local Health and Global Profits (LHGP) research consortium in partnership with the Centre for 21st Century Public Health (C21PH) at the University of Bath, where it is hosted for long-term accessibility.

The hub brings together a curated collection of externally developed tools, frameworks, and evidence, specifically selected to support those working to understand and respond to commercial determinants of health. It is designed for public health professionals, local authorities, policymakers, and advocates – whether developing local policies, building the case for intervention, or engaging with stakeholders.

The hub will be regularly updated as new resources are developed and identified, ensuring it remains a relevant and reliable reference point for the field.

“As knowledge and understanding about commercial determinants of health continues to grow, there is an ever greater demand for toolkits, actions, and plans. This hub is designed to be a go-to place where those resources are collated and kept current,” explains Dr Nason Maani, Deputy Director of LHGP.

The resources in the hub represent diverse perspectives and approaches to addressing CDoH. Their inclusion reflects a commitment to facilitating broad learning and practice sharing, rather than endorsing the views of any particular organisation. Not all resources will necessarily align with LHGP’s or C21PH’s specific policy positions.
