How to access Visio and Project
Availability depends on the type of device you are using.
| Location / device | How to access (August 2026 – August 2027) |
|---|---|
| 1:1 staff devices | Visio and Project 2024, installed via Company Portal |
| AdminDesk and UniDesk | Visio Online and Microsoft Planner, via a web browser |
| Departmental teaching spaces | Visio and Project 2024, available on request |
| Shared and public devices (e.g. Library, general teaching areas) | Visio Online and Microsoft Planner, via a web browser |
Microsoft has retired Project Online; Microsoft Planner is its current suggested alternative for browser-based planning. Planner does not provide the full capabilities of Project Online, so where full Project functionality is needed, use the Project 2024 desktop application (available via Company Portal on staff devices, or on request in departmental teaching spaces).
Installing Visio and Project 2024 (via Company Portal)
- Open the Company Portal app from your Start menu or search bar.
- Select the app you need (Visio 2024 or Project 2024).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install.
Visio Online and Microsoft Planner are available in a web browser through your Microsoft 365 account, with no installation required.
Future licensing changes (from August 2027)
Due to Microsoft licensing changes, Visio and Project may become chargeable from August 2027. Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) will provide full guidance in early 2027 on how to request access and any associated costs.
Background
The 2016 and 2019 versions of Visio and Project were retired in 2025, following the end of Microsoft's support for them. They have been replaced by the 2024 desktop applications and the online versions described above.
