The Doctoral College is looking to appoint 8 Doctoral Development Events Assistants to provide support for the upcoming Doctoral Festival of Ideas on Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th June 2026.

This is an excellent opportunity to engage with the doctoral community, create a welcoming atmosphere and showcase your facilitation and communication skills.

Please note: This opportunity is only open to candidates who are currently enrolled as doctoral students and who will remain registered students for all advertised event dates.

Key Responsibilities:

The work is customer facing, duties include:

  • Introducing speakers and sessions (e.g. chairing sessions)
  • Networking with delegates during breaks and lunches
  • Supporting with registrations
  • Assisting with operational tasks, including manual handling and rearranging event layouts
  • Providing directional guidance to delegates
  • Promoting events by encouraging people on the parade to join in on lunch and bake activities in a friendly, welcoming way

A successful candidate should:

  • Be a current doctoral student and remain registered for the full duration of the advertised event dates (essential requirement)
  • Be eligible to work in the UK (essential requirement)
  • Feel confident speaking in public and introducing speakers or sessions
  • Enjoy interacting with groups and engaging delegates
  • Help create a welcoming and supportive environment for all attendees
  • Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal and networking skills
  • Be proactive and flexible, assisting with operational tasks, registrations and event promotion as needed
  • Bring an enthusiastic, can-do attitude and a practical approach to problem-solving

Key dates

You must be available for the following in-person shifts:

  • Wednesday 17th June, 10:00 - 11:30 | In-person pre-festival briefing (1.5hr)
  • Tuesday 23 June, 08:00 – 16:00 | Event Day 1 (7.5hr)
  • Wednesday 24 June, 09:00 – 17:00 | Event Day 2 (7.5hr)
  • Monday 29 June, 10:00 – 11:00 | Online festival debriefing (1hr)

Pay

This role is offered on a casual worker contract and will be paid at Grade 4 on the University’s hourly paid worker rate. For further details, please see Rates of pay for hourly paid workers

Rate of pay £13.86 per hour

Holiday rate £1.67
