Researchers from the Tobacco Control Research Group (TCRG), part of the University of Bath’s Centre for 21st Century Public Health will be participating in 11 official events across the World Conference on Tobacco Control. This is a particular accomplishment as the conference organisers received over 1400 abstracts for inclusion in the conference.

The World Conference on Tobacco Control will bring together thousands of academics, health professionals, non-government organisations and public officials working in the area of tobacco control. The 2025 conference will be the largest in-person meeting of the international tobacco control community since the previous conference in 2018.

TCRG researchers will be participating in presentations, hosting and chairing symposiums and sharing their ground-breaking research in e-poster sessions. A diverse range of research will be covered, including the health and environmental harms of flue-cured tobacco, tobacco control policy implementation in low-and-middle-income countries, documenting and resisting industry intimidation and the evolution of tobacco industry influence on science.

In addition to sharing their innovative research in a variety of sessions, TCRG researchers will also be hosting a booth where they will have the opportunity to showcase the breadth of their work and connect with contacts old and new.

Since being established in 2007, the Tobacco Control Research Group has researched the activities of the global tobacco industry, particularly the four largest transnational tobacco companies. The group’s work is well-respected within the tobacco control community and has had real impact on tobacco policy making.

The team also manages TobaccoTactics.org, a unique knowledge exchange platform with information about key issues in tobacco control and the global tobacco industry. The site attracts thousands of users from across the world including researchers, policy makers, journalists and advocates.

Dr Allen Gallagher, co-director of Tobacco Control Research Group, comments:

In the seven years since the last World Conference on Tobacco Control was held, there has been huge progress in tobacco control measures across the world. However, tobacco companies are still working hard to get new generations hooked on their addictive and harmful products. We look forward to connecting with the global tobacco control community at this conference and working together to shine a light on the activities of the international tobacco industry.
