As part of the University of Bath's ongoing ambition to integrate sustainability into all aspects of education, the Carbon Literacy course (also known as Climate Literacy) aims to empower members of our community with the knowledge and skills needed to make a positive impact on the world. It provides the opportunity to reflect on individual actions and recognise the power of personal communities when tackling the climate crisis.
The first Carbon Literacy course was held at Bath in 2021 and since then, over 520 staff and students have taken part. Recently, a final year BSc Psychology student, Elena Chamberlain was nominated for ‘Pledgend of the Month’ by the Carbon Literacy Project. Elena was recognised for her consideration to create quantifiable change and is a fantastic example of how we all have the influence to drive positive change. Inspired by the Carbon Literacy course, Elena has since led a climate change workshop in the University of Bath Poetry Collective.
Professor Steve Cayzer, Climate Action Learning and Teaching Liaison shared:
Our Carbon Literacy initiative has proven to be an incredibly effective way to empower staff and students to generate meaningful impact both individually and collectively. I am delighted by the enthusiasm and insight of all participants, and the many inspirational pledges submitted and subsequent impact generated.
The course brings people together whilst engaging them to take meaningful action in the face of the climate crisis. It is open to all staff and students at Bath and advocates for low-carbon changes that can be made at home and in our work and study spaces. Carbon Literacy is externally recognised and is a great opportunity to gain skills that are increasingly valued by employers.
After completing the Carbon Literacy course, you can submit a pledge and gain a Carbon Literacy certification. The certification demonstrates an understanding of the challenges our world is facing and a commitment to addressing climate change. You can continue your progress by becoming a Carbon Literacy facilitator, find out more on the Climate Literacy webpage.
Take part in a Carbon Literacy course and see how collectively we can all make a positive difference at Bath and beyond. The next course is running on Friday 9 May 2025. We all have a part to play in addressing the climate crisis, and together, we can tackle the climate emergency on a local, national, and international scale.
