The symposium is part of the fifth conference on advances in molecular mechanisms underlying neurological disorders, a joint conference of the ESN and Biochemical Society to be held in Bath in June 2013.

The symposium will feature recent developments in the cutting edge technology of Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Leading researchers in the area of Neurodegenerative diseases will discuss their research using iPS cells to develop models for enhancing our understanding of how neurodegenerative disease develop which will have applications in developing therapeutic approaches.

iPS cells are formed from adult cells by reprogramming and this year's Nobel prize in Medicine was awarded to Professor S Yamanaka for his seminal work on deriving iPS cells.

The Company of Biologists is a not-for-profit publisher and UK charity. Established in 1925, The Company aims to promote research and study across all branches of biology. The Company publishes three internationally renowned journals: Development, Journal of Cell Science and The Journal of Experimental Biology, as well as two newer Open Access journals: Disease Models & Mechanisms (DMM) and Biology Open (BiO).

The Company of Biologists provides grants and sponsorship to support innovation in all aspects of biological research and also runs a series of progressive, fully funded, scientific workshops.

Dr Vasanta Subramanian’s research on iPS cell derived Disease in a Dish model for neurodegenerative diseases is funded by The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) and BRACE.
