The Halpin Steering Group has been considering how best to implement a reduction in the size of Council, as recommended by the recent Halpin report on Council effectiveness. It was agreed that the following proposed new Council composition be published for discussion prior to Council considering and deciding the composition at its meeting on 29 November:

  • Chair
  • Treasurer
  • Convocation member
  • 9 other Lay members
  • Vice-Chancellor
  • 4 Academic staff (Chair of Academic Assembly, 3 elected from Senate)
  • 2 Staff not on Academic Assembly
  • 2 Students’ Union Officers

The changes are to reduce the total number from 26 to 21; for the Pro-Chancellors no longer to be members of Council; for there to be 3 members from Senate; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor to attend with no vote; and to have one additional member of staff not on Academic Assembly to improve the balance between academic and non-academic staff.

There will be meetings on 31 October for Academic Assembly (1.15pm) and Professional Services staff (4pm) to hear more about this from Ruth Foreman, the Chair of Council.

If you have any views please either express them at one of those meetings or email councileffectivenesssteeringgroup@bath.ac.uk by Monday 12 November 2018.
