Dr Fabio Nemetz, Director of Postgraduate Studies and Senior Lecturer of Computer Science, has been awarded a prestigious National Teaching Fellowship.
The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme celebrates and recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in higher education.
Fabio has been recognised for significantly advancing teaching excellence in the Department of Computer Science, demonstrating deep commitment to student success throughout his roles from Teaching Fellow to Director of Undergraduate Studies, Director of Teaching, and Director of Postgraduate Studies.
He was also praised for notably contributing to improving student outcomes and the department’s National Student Survey (NSS) satisfaction scores, consistently placing it among the top UK Computer Science departments. And his engaging, inclusive teaching methods earned him the University’s top Excellence in Teaching Award in 2023.
Fabio said: “I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire teaching community. I take great pride in fostering a vibrant student community where everyone feels supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. Our collective efforts have created an environment where students can thrive academically and personally. I am grateful for the support from my colleagues and students who inspire me every day to push the boundaries of teaching excellence.”
Professor Momna Hejmadi, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education Quality and Enhancement) says: "Fabio is one of the most energetic, innovative and inspirational colleagues I have ever worked with; a real star and champion for excellence in learning and teaching at the University. He is a tremendous asset to the department, Faculty and the University.
“He has a real drive to enhance the learning experience for our students and works in partnership with students and staff. He is the main reason why the student satisfaction scores have increased dramatically in Computer Science (the 'F Factor'). His research-led, evidence-informed, enthusiastic and fun approach to teaching makes him a fantastic role model for students and staff alike.”
In addition to Fabio’s award win this year, the University is proud to have two other colleagues who were nominated for fantastic work in their respective areas for teaching and learning. Special mention goes to Professor Gail Forey, Associate Dean from the Department of Education, and Dr Susan Crennell, Director of Studies for Biochemistry and Director of Teaching for the Natural Sciences degrees from the Department of Life Sciences.
Gail introduced a new research and teaching model for Postgraduates who Teach (PGwT) in her department and developed a handbook to promote student reflection for their teaching and research practice.
Among her achievements, Susan has developed approaches to practical skills and introduced a skills assessment to enable students to recognise the skills they have developed.
