More than 100 students, placement providers and Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences staff came together for the Faculty’s 2025 Placements Awards ceremony last week.

The annual event showcases the remarkable achievements of students and placement employers, highlighting the success stories and lasting professional relationships built through Bath’s placement programme.

The awards are voted for by the students, employers and members of staff. Over 180 outstanding nominations were submitted for students and 40 nominations for employers.

Professor Fiona Gillison, from the Faculty's Department for Health, welcomed everyone and spoke about how central placements are to education and the culture of the University of Bath:

Placements really are seen as a flagship element of our offer here at Bath. Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Phil Taylor, regularly meets with alumni from across the world and has told us many times that a key theme from those discussions is how important the placement year was for our alumni; how it really mattered to them, and the huge benefits they gained from it. This chimes with Phil’s own experience: he describes his own placement year as ‘transformational’ and our deserved excellent reputation in this area was one of the reasons he was attracted to Bath.

Martin Gore, Head of Employability, hosted the evening, assisted by PGT (postgraduate taught) Employability Manager, Victoria Maskell.

Martin explained how valuable placements are as a learning experience, with nearly 99% of students recommending it and 50% of students being offered a graduate role or a possibility of a graduate role following a placement.

Winners and Highly Commended students received a certificate and a voucher, whilst employers received certificates.

The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences placements team manages over 900 placements for students each year.
