Miles Pemberton, a first-year PhD student with the Accountable, Responsible and Transparent Artificial Intelligence (ART-AI) CDT and Faculty of Science, will be hosting a workshop at this year's One Young World summit in Montreal this September. His session will focus on the diverse applications of AI across different industries and will use his own research in AI and chemistry as a case study. This will be the first time a University of Bath delegate has hosted a workshop at a One Young World summit.

One Young World is a global community that unites young leaders, business professionals, policymakers, humanitarians, activists, and entrepreneurs from across the globe to drive meaningful positive change. This year’s summit will focus on the themes of indigenous voices, the climate ecological crisis, artificial intelligence (AI), health inequality, and peace. Miles will attend the summit with three other University of Bath delegates.

Miles’ workshop will be held as part of the AI theme and will encourage attendees to consider a wide range of AI applications within their own industries, as well as some of the challenges with implementing them. The workshop will draw on Miles’ expertise from his additional MRes studies with the ART-AI CDT as well as his own PhD research in chemistry using AI and machine learning to understand new chemical reactions and support the development of pharmaceutical molecules.

Miles said: “This workshop aims to get people moving away from thinking about AI solely as chatbots like ChatGPT and towards diverse applications of AI across their own industries. We will focus on how we can use an abundance of data to drive new innovations in the workplace and brainstorm some of the challenges associated with the implementation of AI. I am hopeful that this will inspire interesting conversations and showcase the transformative effects AI can have.”

Upon returning from Montreal, Miles will join the other three delegates to plan and host the One Young World Bath 2025 forum on Saturday 29 March.

This event, the ninth in the series, will feature inspiring keynote talks, panel discussions and workshops focussing on three of the themes from the Montreal summit.
