Why take part

The Culture and Inclusion team have developed a short survey to better understand the barriers to disclosing a disability or long-term health condition in the workplace. Currently, only 6.6% of our workforce have declared a disability in iTrent. We believe this underrepresents the true picture, and we want to understand why.

We know that disclosing a disability, illness, or long-term physical or mental health condition can be difficult. Research shows that worries may include discrimination or privacy concerns, but we want to hear from our staff what is creating barriers here at Bath, in order to address them.

This survey has been developed in collaboration with the aFLAME disability network for staff and PGRs and the Neurodiversity Network.

Who should take part

We want to hear from all staff who identify as having a disability. For the purpose of this survey, a disability, illness, or long-term condition could include (but is not limited to):

  • Physical disabilities (e.g. wheelchair user, hearing impairment)
  • Learning disabilities (e.g. Down’s syndrome)
  • Neurodivergent conditions (e.g. ADHD, autism, dyslexia)
  • Long-term illnesses (e.g. diabetes, epilepsy)
  • Mental health conditions (e.g. anxiety, depression)

How to take part

The survey will be hosted on the external People Insight survey platform and will take less than 10 minutes to complete.

It is open between 19 January – 4 February and you will receive a unique participation link in your inbox from survey-invite@peopleinsight.co.uk on the day of launch, inviting you to take part.

Everyone who fills out the survey will have the chance to win a £50 gift card. We will select one winner per job family after the survey has closed.

Confidentiality

To help us analyse the survey and understand how different groups of employees feel about various subjects, we have uploaded information such as names, job families, department names, grades, length of service and age range so we can issue unique invitations and reminders and monitor response rates. All other demographic and job-related information is being requested on a voluntary basis within the survey.

At no point will anyone at the University, including senior leaders and managers, be able to see individual responses. Data groups of fewer than 10 people will not be reported on.

Next steps

Anonymised, aggregated reports will be shared with our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committees. Your feedback will be analysed to help us identify and remove barriers to disability disclosure and top-level feedback shared with the aFLAME and Neurodiversity Network Chairs.

At the end of the survey, you’ll have the option to express an interest in joining a focus group, where we’ll explore these issues in more depth.

If you have any questions, please contact diversity@bath.ac.uk.

Thank you for helping us build a truly inclusive community.
