The university is pleased to welcome Ian Spence, who joins us on 5 November as Coordinating Faith Leader. Ian will take up the post from Rev'd Simon Winchcombe, to whom the university is grateful for his interim cover in the role since September.

Ian will play a central role in leading and shaping our multifaith provision on campus, working collaboratively with colleagues to provide pastoral and spiritual support, build understanding between faith groups, and contribute to an inclusive environment where all are respected and valued. This role reflects our commitment to championing faith literacy, interfaith dialogue, and religious inclusion as part of our broader equality, diversity, and inclusion strategy.

Ian Spence is looking forward to joining the university and has said:

In the light of the current news narrative, the University of Bath’s commitment to multifaith conversation feels timely. It is so important that we learn from each other, and I am pleased to be part of that journey within the university. My background is in chaplaincy and interfaith inclusive dialogue. I am also a freelance broadcaster and trained in wellness and wellbeing practices. I look forward to welcoming all students and staff to join us in the Chaplaincy Centre for support, conversation, and cake!

Professor Marcus Munafò, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost said:

On behalf of the University of Bath I’m delighted to welcome Ian to our community. We strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all our staff and students, and Ian will play a vital role in creating the space for dialogue and understanding at a time when this has never been more important.
