This year, we were able to hold an additional call for the Bath International Research Funding Schemes, supported by a donation from Santander. The call focussed on collaborations with Latin America and proved very popular, with a total of 21 applications submitted.

The seven awards went to:

Dr Michael Carley (Mechanical Engineering), who will host Prof Fabricio Simeoni de Sousa from Universidade de São Paulo (USP) to further research into the modelling of metamaterials for medical engineering and noise control

Dr Trevor Grimshaw (Education), who will visit Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM) to develop a research network around English as an international language and intercultural communication in higher education

Dr Sheila Samsatli (Chemical Engineering), who will host colleagues from Universidade de São Paulo (USP) to strengthen and develop research collaborations in the area of modelling biomass value chains in Brazil

Dr Andres Sandoval-Hernandez & Dr Michael Donnelly (Education), who will further extend collaborations with Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM) and Universidad Catolica de Chile, to develop large grant proposals for school and system level strategies for reducing educational inequalities in Mexico and beyond

Prof Rob Scheichl (Mathematical Science), who will further expand the already successful BUC (Bath-UNAM-CIMAT) research collaboration with a workshop on Uncertainty Quantification with colleagues from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM) and Centro de Investigacion en Matematicas A.C. (CIMAT)

Dr Janet Scott (Chemistry), who will host a PhD student, Bruno Ono, from Universidade de São Paulo (USP) for four months to further research into 3D porous tissue engineering scaffolds based on modified cellulose materials

Gustav Bösehans, a PhD student of Dr Ian Walker (Psychology), who will travel to Brazil for six months to conduct research into sustainable transportation with colleagues at Universidade de São Paulo (USP)
