Following the launch of Teams Premium (TP) for staff on 12 January 2026, we’re following up with advice and guidance about how to make the most of the new features.
Whilst a wealth of information, including frequently asked questions, is provided on the TP Portal, here are a few key nuggets to help you get more from TP today.
Using TP to enhance your collaboration
The most popular TP feature, Intelligent Recap, offers a suite of outputs when you record or transcribe a meeting, such as:
- Auto-generated meeting summaries: highly sophisticated meeting summaries and action items, freeing you to focus on the conversation.
- Personalised highlights: Recording timelines showing who spoke when, and personalised lists of when you were mentioned, all help you to find key moments quickly.
- Chapters in recordings: With recordings automatically divided into chapters and topics, you can jump to relevant content easily.
These outputs are easily reached through Teams, in the Calendar or Meet views, and you can use Copilot to combine AI summaries with your preferred minuting templates afterwards for bespoke outputs. However, AI is not flawless, so always check AI summaries for accuracy.
Making meetings easier to set up
There are additional TP features, when you set up a meeting, that could benefit certain types of meetings, such as:
- Meeting access - including sensitivity, lobby control, announcing joiners
- Advanced protection - including preventing screen capture and controlling copying and forwarding
- Roles - including controlling who can present or co-chair
- Participation - including muting and camera controls for attendees on entry
- Recording & transcription - including automatic capture, who can record/transcribe and access to recordings
When you set up a Teams meeting in Calendar or Outlook, look for ‘Meeting Options’ button to access these different features. You can then save your settings as a templates for future meetings.
Using TP to capture sensitive discussions
Capturing personal or confidential discussions, whether as video or audio transcript, is subject to the same data protection, privacy and freedom of information legislation as any other kind of recording. Attendees must be informed before a meeting is captured, and they have the right to decline. Please see Guidance on Recording Meetings to understand your responsibilities around consent.
As a general rule, you should not use TP to capture a meeting where a student's personal information is discussed. There may be exceptions, where you are required to record by law or regulation, or by the student's own request (if they are present), but always check with HR in these instances.
Recordings are routinely deleted after 90days, but AI-generated summaries remain on chat indefinitely, and cannot currently be deleted. No TP content is made available to any AI learning models, and the security model ensures that Copilot search results are limited to what users have explicit permission to see.
Teams Premium offers a helping hand to enrich our collaboration and make meetings easier to organise, recall and navigate. We are already seeing very positive feedback from new users, surprised and delighted by the quality of the outputs. So, we encourage everyone to explore and test the new features. Enhancing your TP awareness and skills could benefit you in many ways, so why not try it out today?
