With National Apprenticeship Week coming up (9 - 15 February 2026), we want to take the time to celebrate our Staff Apprentices across the University.
Staff Apprentices are those members of staff who participate in our Staff Apprenticeship scheme, taking up a qualification alongside their role. This qualification is financed by the University Apprenticeship Levy fund, and staff manage their study alongside their role. Staff are supported by their line managers to allocate 6 hours of their working time a week to their study. This is often used to read articles, apply their learning to their fulltime work or complete assignments. This is open to all University of Bath staff who are eligible, with key eligibility criteria including:
Must have lived in the UK for 3 years before commencing the apprenticeship
Must have a contract that lasts the same length as the apprenticeship
Must be an apprenticeship that is directly relevant to job role
Staff Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to take meaningful steps in terms of career development, enhancing your skills in your current role, making a meaningful contribution to your team and wider university community, and progressing your career development for the future. On completion, you gain a nationally recognised qualification that can be equivalent to GCSE, A level or even Degree level. We allow our apprentices to choose the course and provider that suits their needs. Line manager approval is required to ensure that the staff member can allocate 6 hours a week of working time to their study.

As Staff Apprenticeships are a big commitment, we want to highlight and celebrate the dedicated individuals who are undertaking these courses across the University of Bath. We have over 100 Staff Apprentices across the University, making a real impact by applying their learning to their role.
A shining example is our Team Leader Staff Apprentice, Maria Chihaia from Campus Services. Maria has shared her experience of her apprenticeship with us, and of professional development she has participated in at the University:
"Over the past 16 months, my apprenticeship has been one of the best experiences of my professional journey. I studied Team Leading NVQ Level 3, which helped me develop valuable skills and knowledge, as well as achieve Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths. This apprenticeship also gave me the opportunity to meet and work with other students, building strong relationships. Courses such as Motivation and Delegation, and Building High-Performance Teams had a very positive impact on my development. I am grateful to Campus Services Academy for the opportunities and support that have contributed to my professional growth."
We are so proud of all our Staff Apprentices, and invite you to take the time to celebrate them with us this week!
