As part of Research Culture Month this June, the University of Bath today launches The Researcher Academy to support researchers to develop their research and leadership skills, no matter which direction they decide to take their careers in the future.
Developed in direct response from the research community, The Researcher Academy is a key commitment within the University’s Research Culture Action Plan and is integral to the University’s work to foster a more supportive, inclusive research environment.
Professor Sarah Hainsworth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), said; “I am delighted that we are launching The Researcher Academy to support the development of our researchers. The Researcher Academy strengthens our commitment to both the career development of our researchers and to an inclusive research culture. This initiative enhances our existing career, and development programmes and reaffirms our commitment to supporting future leaders – whether they pursue careers in research, academia, industry or beyond. I look forward to seeing the Academy growing to be a successful part of our drive for global excellence and impact in our research.”
Support and development opportunities offered by The Researcher Academy include:
- Access to resources and useful links via a dedicated SharePoint hub
- Tailored leadership and academic development programmes, events and workshops
- An annual programme of networking opportunities including ‘Hangout in the Hub’, ‘Postdocs and Pizzas’ and ‘Postdoc Appreciation Week’
- Opportunities to contribute to an improved working environment through the Research Staff Working Group
Annali Bamber-Jones, Researcher Development Manager who leads the work of The Researcher Academy says; “Being a postdoc can be challenging - from short- term contracts and relocations to the pressure of doing research while investing in career development. Balancing all this while trying to maintain a healthy work-life balance can feel isolating.
“What excites me most is that this is a visible, long-term investment in the development of and support for our researchers, empowering them to maximise their potential.”
The Researcher Academy is designed to build a strong, supportive community through meaningful opportunities for connection, development and collaboration – all of which will contribute to researchers’ overall wellbeing and success.
