The Statutes of the University provide the constitutional framework that allow the University to govern its affairs. They give details of the members and officers of the University and the roles and responsibilities of statutory bodies including Council, Senate, and the Boards of Studies. The Statutes can only be amended with the approval of the Privy Council.

The Privy Council has approved revisions to the Statutes of the University. The main revisions to the statutes were:

  • The inclusion of a specific provision relating to the appointment of the Chair of Council;
  • Provisions to allow the reduction in the size of Council to 15 members (as well as the discretion to increase its size to up to 19 members);
  • Recognition of the University’s academic structure now being one of faculties; and,
  • Removal of references to students being able to appeal to the Student Appeals Committee to reflect that such appeals come under a separate process.

There were consultations with UEB and Senate on the revisions to the Statutes and these were approved by Council before being given final approval by the Privy Council.

You can read the new statutes which have been uploaded to the University’s website. If you have any questions regarding these, please contact the Governance Office.
