The Faculty of Science warmly congratulates Professor Ventsislav Valev, Head of the Department of Physics, on being shortlisted for the University of Bath’s Leadership in Learning and Teaching Award 2025. Although he was not selected as the final recipient, the nomination and the shortlisting are a significant recognition of his transformational leadership and lasting contributions to education at the University.

The award recognises individuals who have led major educational change, influenced colleagues, and enhanced the student experience through personal vision and effective leadership. Professor Valev’s shortlisting highlights his outstanding role in shaping the Department of Physics and supporting innovation across the wider Faculty.

Throughout his tenure, Professor Valev has consistently championed student and staff wellbeing as central to departmental success. Under his leadership, the department has cultivated a values-driven culture, introduced creative educational initiatives, and significantly strengthened both its research profile and sense of community.

Key developments include the co-creation of a departmental Vivid Vision – a collaborative strategy with clear, transparent progress tracking – and visible commitments to inclusivity and shared identity, from accessibility improvements and community murals to redesigned work spaces and a culture of collective recognition.

Professor Valev has worked closely with colleagues to restructure research groups, develop new funding streams, expand outreach, and implement imaginative student engagement tools, such as a popular badge scheme that rewards active participation.

Reflecting on the achievement, Professor Duncan Craig, Dean of the Faculty of Science, said:
"I am very pleased to congratulate Professor Valev on being shortlisted for this leadership award. Under his leadership, the Department of Physics has undergone significant transformation, including a strategic restructuring of research groups, the relocation of many academics into over 500 m² of newly refurbished collaborative laboratory space, and a major overhaul of how the department presents itself, with a new focus on collective achievements. This shortlisting is well-deserved recognition of Professor Valev’s outstanding contribution to the Faculty of Science."

Professor Valev commented:
“I am deeply honoured to have been shortlisted for this award, and I am truly grateful for the recognition. None of the progress we have made would have been possible without the outstanding team of experienced leaders in the department who supported me every step of the way. This shortlisting is a testament to the power of collaboration, and I see it as a reflection of the collective effort, vision, and dedication that drives our Department forward.”

The Faculty of Science celebrates this well-earned recognition and thanks Professor Valev for his inspiring leadership, creativity, and commitment to advancing education at the University of Bath.
