Today marks the start of Refugee Week, the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. This year's theme is 'community as a superpower'.
As a University of Sanctuary that supports a number of refugee and asylum seeker students, Refugee Week is a great opportunity to bring our people together to celebrate our diverse and inspiring community. This year we've got a whole host of activity at the University - check out the schedule below.
What's on
Monday 16 June: 'Words of hope in community and education'
There's still time to come along to our drop-in workshop in the library from 10am-1pm today. The workshop will use poetry and creative activities to encourage our university community to consider the theme of hope, explore identity and build connections through writing and art. Whether you can join for the full three hours or just spare 15 minutes to get the creative juices flowing, please sign up and come along. Did we mention there will be coffee and cake too...
Tuesday 17 June: Contribute to our virtual Tree of Hope
On Tuesday we're launching our virtual 'Tree of Hope', an online noticeboard where you can share your words of hope with our community. Draft your own poem or share someone else's inspirational words that may have moved you over the years. Look out for the launch of the Tree of Hope tomorrow.
Wednesday 18 June: Roundtable event: ‘Community as a Superpower’
Professor Jane White, Vice-President (Community & Inclusion), is hosting a roundtable discussion with local organisations on supporting displaced people in our region through existing projects and future collaboration.
All week: Visit the Tree of Hope in the library foyer
Our real life Tree of Hope officially launches after today's workshop. Visit the library foyer and add your own leaf to the tree. Need inspiration? Here's some questions to get you started:
What does hope mean to you?
Finish the sentence – Hope is…
What gives you hope?
What do you hope for your future?
Whether you're on campus or away for the summer break, it's easy to get involved, show your support and share your ideas.
Community is our superpower, Bath.
Happy World Refugee Week!
