In a world of disruption, war and climate change, what matters is a focus on innovation, and developing solutions for real-world problems. At the University of Bath, our research is already helping to change the world for the better.

92% of our research is classed as world-leading or internationally excellent by the Research Excellence Framework 2021.

Research is needed in every area of life and society: to discover new drugs to treat chronic disease; to cope with an ageing population; or to tackle the climate crisis. PhD students are the thought-leaders driving so many of these solutions.

At Bath, we are supporting PhD cohorts working across priority areas at the heart of the greatest global challenges and opportunities of our time, such as sustainability; health and wellbeing; and digital.

The impact of PhDs

PhD candidates have an enormous and positive ripple effect on their academic communities and beyond.

Dr Antoine Buchard, Royal Society University Research Fellow and Professor of Chemistry, says: "PhD students are the driving force of a project, the heart and soul of our research groups: they are the keeper of our research integrity and pass on their knowledge to the next generation."

30% of PhD graduates remain in academia where they continue to advance teaching and research. They become the inspirational lecturers needed to support new waves of undergraduates to excel, such as Dr Leen Jabban.

Leen was a PhD scholar at Bath and is now a lecturer within our Department for Electrical & Electronic Engineering. She also volunteers as a Gold Mentor to our undergraduate Gold Scholarship students.

She says: "The support I have received from my donor has been instrumental in my PhD journey. Their generous funding has turned my childhood aspiration of developing upper-limb prostheses into a remarkable reality. Beyond the financial assistance, their belief in my potential has boosted my confidence and opened doors to extraordinary opportunities."
