Following nine years of exceptional service to our university community as University Chaplain and Interfaith Leader, the Revd Nigel Rawlinson will be leaving on 18 July 2025 after being appointed Rector (House for Duty) at Freshford, with Limpley Stoke and Hinton Charterhouse.
Throughout his time at the University, Nigel has been a steadfast and compassionate presence, serving the spiritual needs of both students and staff. His work in introducing events and celebrations within the Chaplaincy has deeply enriched our community. His passion for interfaith dialogue and understanding will leave a strong legacy, notably through his efforts to create the university’s Memorial Garden, a testament to his commitment to building bridges of compassion and unity.
Professor Jane White, Vice-President (Community and Inclusion) said:
It is with both gratitude and sadness that we announce Nigel will be moving on from the University. On behalf of students and staff at the University of Bath, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Nigel for his tireless service and his deep commitment to the spiritual life of so many in this institution. His presence has brought comfort and hope, reminding us of the power of faith, love, and community. Nigel’s contributions will not be forgotten, and he will be deeply missed by all who have been touched by his kindness and ministry.
Among the many ways Nigel has supported our community, he will be especially remembered for his leadership in the annual Carol Service at Bath Abbey, his hosting of the Remembrance service, his interfaith work (forming the University of Bath Interfaith Forum in 2017 with the Islamic Society, then working with Jewish and Muslim students, and overseeing an expansion of our faith space provision, most recently to accommodate members of our Hindu and Sikh communities) and his unwavering support to those in our community during the pandemic and at times of grief and loss.
As Nigel and his wife, Pat, prepare to embark on this next chapter in their journey in Freshford and the wider parish, we hold them in our thoughts and wish them well in all they do.
Nigel will continue to play a full and active role in the university community until 18 July and details of a farewell gathering will be shared closer to this date.
