Ramadan is a significant time of reflection, prayer, community and generosity for many Muslim members of our University of Bath community. As the Islamic calendar is lunar, the exact dates vary each year and are confirmed by the sighting of the new moon. Ramadan 2026 is currently expected to begin on the evening of Tuesday 17 February, with fasting beginning the following day, and to end around the evening of Thursday 19 March 2026 (some communities may observe the end from the evening of Wednesday 18 March), depending on the moon sighting.
At Bath, our commitment to inclusion is practical as well as principled. During Ramadan, we encourage all colleagues to be mindful of how fasting can affect energy and concentration, and to offer reasonable flexibility where possible. This might include avoiding working lunches and late meetings, being considerate when scheduling demanding teaching activities, assessments or events, and supporting staff and students who may wish to adjust their day around prayer and the fast.
As the University of Bath’s Race Equality Charter Lead, Dr Teslim Bukoye also acknowledges what this month represents for many in our community: “Ramadan is a time of faith, discipline and belonging. At the University of Bath, we want our Muslim staff and students to feel seen, respected and supported, not just in words but in the everyday decisions that shape learning, teaching and working life.”
