These short daily challenges are designed to help us all understand what change is needed within ourselves to move towards a more equitable world.
Schedule just five minutes in your calendar each day from 2 – 6 February. Small actions can make a big difference.
If you have any questions or want to learn more, please email diversity@bath.ac.uk.
Day one: Stereotyping
This video from Google explains that we all have bias, caused by mental shortcuts our brain creates based on cultural norms and our past experiences.
Interested in learning more? You can dive deeper into the types of unconscious bias and how to challenge your own biases in this Inclusive employers article.
Day two: The Bystander Effect
Watch this two-minute video from Scientific American explaining the ‘diffusion of responsibility’. Think about how this would apply if you saw someone being racially discriminated against at work. Could you speak up?
If you have the time, you can find out more about research on bystander conduct from our School of Management.
Day three: Differing communication styles
This video on FutureLearn explains the difference between High Context and Low Context cultures, and how communication differs in each. What is your communication style, and how can you recognise and adjust to differences in workplace communication styles?
Day four: Being an active ally
Watch this one-minute TEDtalk clip about putting allyship into practice with small, everyday actions.
Now spend a few minutes considering the allyship evaluation questions in this Forbes article.
Day five: Make a pledge to act
Take some time to think about what you have learnt this week. What small change can you make in your day-to-day life to make a difference to race equality here at the University of Bath?
We’d love to know what impact this challenge has had on our community, please consider submitting your pledge anonymously here.
