The way international students and staff travel to the UK is changing. If you have a BRP card that expires on 31 December 2024, you need to access your eVisa before your BRP card expires. If you haven't already done this, please take action as soon as possible. You can find instructions for accessing your eVisa on our web pages.

From 01 January 2025, you only need your passport to travel back to the UK as your eVisa details will be checked digitally. However, whilst the new digital system is being implemented, there are a few things you can do to help ensure a smooth journey when returning to the UK:

You must make sure the passport you want to use when travelling to and from the UK is linked to your UKVI account. Adding your passport to your UKVI account can take a few days so we recommend doing this as soon as possible.

If you have not been able to access your eVisa, and you are travelling back to the UK on or after 01 January 2025, the UK government have confirmed you can travel if your immigration permission is still valid. You should carry your expired BRP card with you – your carrier may ask to see it. As long as your immigration permission is still valid, you can continue to use your expired BRP to travel to the UK until 31 March 2025.

If you have lost your BRP card, it is no longer possible to replace this. In this case, if you have not been able to access your eVisa, you should consider applying for a temporary visa which will allow you to enter the UK only once.

You can find more information about travelling to the UK using and using your eVisa on the gov.uk web pages.
