The International Relations Office is excited to announce that a 2020-21 Global Chair, Professor John Warner will be visiting the university on the 14th and 15th of June 2022. A world-renowned pioneer in the field of green chemistry and an expert and advocate of sustainable technologies, Professor Warner is recognised for his leadership and expertise spanning across academia, industry and policy.

As part of his visit, Professor Warner will deliver a public lecture on Inventing a sustainable future in partnership with nature on Tuesday 14th June at 5.15pm. The lecture will describe mechanisms in nature that we should consider when designing the human-built world with practical examples drawn from the real world and will be followed by a welcome reception.

Professor Warner is President and Chief Technology Officer of the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry, a research organisation he founded in 2007 to develop green chemistry technologies across all sectors of the chemical industry. He also co-founded Beyond Benign, a non‐profit organisation dedicated to sustainability and green chemistry education and was appointed a Distinguished Professor of Green Chemistry at Monash University in 2019.

Since 2020, he has been a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Zymergen Corporation, where he is helping to design and create commercial technologies inspired by nature and consistent with the principles of green chemistry.

Professor Warner is being hosted by The Centre for Sustainable and Circular Technologies which is led by Professor Matthew Davidson. As a Global Chair, Professor Warner has been working closely with students, colleagues and partners to develop creative and collaborative solutions to global sustainability problems and promote industrial engagement. He has inspired new pathways for the chemistry curriculum at Bath and has provided mentorship and career advice for our PhD students and early career researchers. His Global Chair is also lending further support to Bath’s strategic partnership with Monash University, including joint research with the Monash Sustainable Development Institute.
