Following the successful rollout of Windows 11 to 1:1 laptops, the Windows 11 Upgrade Project is now extending to include shared laptops. This ensures that, where possible, all University-owned laptops are upgraded before Windows 10 reaches end-of-support.

What to expect

From September, shared devices will start receiving notifications when the Windows 11 upgrade is available. The rollout will occur in phases, with additional devices upgraded each week.

Please ensure shared laptops are powered on regularly. This keeps them up to date and connected to our device management systems. Devices left switched off for long periods may lose contact with the network, delaying updates and potentially causing support issues.

As part of this rollout, small but important changes are being made to device configuration and naming. These updates will help standardise shared devices and make it easier to identify which types we support. Read more about the updated categories.

How the upgrade will be delivered

  • A notification will appear on the shared device, similar to a standard Windows update
  • Installation can be scheduled at a convenient time within a 7-day window
  • If installation is not completed within this period, the device will automatically restart to finalise the upgrade
  • Note: shared devices are configured to automatically reboot outside of working hours, so the update may be installed automatically

How long will the upgrade take

  • Most laptops will take up to 2 hours
  • The device will remain usable for most of the process
  • Upgrading on campus may be faster, but it is not essential

Device compatibility

If a device isn't compatible with Windows 11 due to age or hardware, it will be replaced in line with the University’s ‘one user, one device’ model. If this applies to your device, you will be contacted directly to arrange the next steps.
